This is what retaliation looks like when Black families speak truth to power.
Jazz musician Mike Phillips and his wife were forced off campus and had the police called on them—after their 4th grade son bravely reported being called a racist slur by another student at The Madeleine School, a private Catholic school in Portland.
Instead of protecting the student or investigating the incident, the school doubled down.
The principal, Tresa Rast, accused the child of lying, dismissed the concerns, and escalated the situation by involving law enforcement. Then, in a disturbing abuse of authority, the school expelled their son.
This isn’t just about one school. It’s about a system that punishes Black families for standing up for dignity and justice.
Calling the police on Black parents—over a conversation about racism—isn’t neutrality. It’s weaponization.
We have to ask ourselves: Who gets protected? Who gets punished? And who gets erased when they speak up?
