The cotton sector is at the origin of a very important part of the export earnings of the producing countries, but they transform very little their production of fiber locally. They do not sufficiently add value to the co-products of the seed. A real shortfall for the creation of added value and jobs in Africa.

With a record production of 714,000 tonnes of cotton, Benin is the leading cotton producer ahead of Mali and Burkina Faso, thus maintaining its rank as the sector leader in Africa.

With this volume the country produces 315,000 tonnes of fiber. But local fiber consumption does not exceed 3,000 tonnes per year, the equivalent of barely 1% of national production. Almost all is intended for export.

The textile industry remains the big absence in the development of local processing.
