Big win for animals in Florida! Starting January 1, 2026, “Dexter’s Law” created a public statewide registry that prevents convicted animal abusers from adopting or purchasing pets. Shelters, rescues, and even the public can now check the database before approving any adoption—making it much harder for abusers to get their hands on vulnerable animals.
Florida is only the second state with this kind of strong, comprehensive protection, and it also increases penalties for the worst cases of animal cruelty. This is real progress toward safer, kinder homes for every dog, cat, and pet who deserves love, not harm.
Seeing families like this one cuddling their rescue pup reminds us why these changes matter so much. Every step forward protects more animals and gives them the forever homes they dream of.
