What Does “Balanced Training” Actually Mean?

You may hear the term balanced trainer used a lot, but we want to take a moment to explain what that looks like in real life and why it is the approach both Zach and I follow in our training.

Balanced training for Purple Pups ATL means we use both motivation (positive reinforcement) and accountability (Negative reinforcement)to help dogs clearly understand what is being asked of them. Just like people, dogs learn best when expectations are fair, consistent, and clearly communicated.

Here is a real-world example:

If we are teaching a dog to sit, we start by showing them how. We use food, praise, and repetition to build understanding. Once the dog clearly knows the command, we then hold them accountable for following through. That accountability might look like gentle leash pressure or structured guidance, followed immediately by praise the moment they make the correct choice.

This is the same way dogs naturally learn from each other. A mother dog encourages desired behavior but also corrects behavior that is unsafe or inappropriate. The correction is not emotional or harsh, it is clear, timely, and fair.

Balanced training is not about punishment or fear. It is about:
• Teaching first
• Communicating clearly
• Reinforcing good choices
• Providing guidance when a dog makes the wrong choice

We use positive reinforcement every single day. We also believe that once a dog understands a command, it is our responsibility to give them structure and consistency so they can succeed in the real world, not just in a quiet living room with treats in our hands.

This approach creates dogs who are confident, reliable, and able to make good decisions in everyday life. It also helps owners feel supported and empowered instead of frustrated or confused.

This is the balanced training philosophy that both Zach and I stand behind, and it is what we use with every dog that comes into our program.
