There’s evidence for safe mobilization of patient supported with on ECMO with a femoral cannulation strategy. The Wells et al article provides a great clinical resource for screening the cannula (s)/circuit tolerance to hip flexion/mobilization. The Abrams et al article provides patient and ECMO related factors associated with early mobility, outlines complications, and yes comes to the conclusion that mobilization with femoral cannulation is safe. The one caveat I’d like to add to the research, is mobilization with collaborative multidisciplinary team speaking the same language when communicating about the patient increases safety.
If you’re still a little freaked out or apprehensive about all the “what ifs” involved with mobilization OR dont’ speak rehab ECMO we’d love to see you at the upcoming adult and neo/peds ECMO courses in Murfeesboro! Experience the “what ifs” and learn the lingo to troubleshoot the “what ifs” to maximize the patients participation and increase safety. We’d love to see you at our next rehab ECMO training! Check out the link in bio for course dates and registration. mobility
