I had to explain that every group has good and bad people—white, black, or otherwise. Back then, blatant racism was the standard, and as the movie shows, the same people smiling in your face during the day might come for your land with a gun at night. White people aren’t inherently bad, and we aren’t inherently good; everyone has a mix of both.
The real lesson here is the power of education. Sarah almost lost out because she didn’t know the deal structure, but once she read up and realized the standard was 12.5% in royalties, she became a threat to their scheme. Because they couldn’t outsmart her, they turned to violence.
I’ll never teach my kids to judge a whole group by how they look, but I want them aware of history. While racism isn’t always as blatant today, it still shows up in the “fine print.” I told them about my own experience taking a $40k salary while my counterparts were making $80k for the same work. Because I didn’t know how to negotiate or “work the deal” yet, my ignorance cost me $40,000 a year.
