📚✨ This program year, we partnered with Cedar Preschool in Douglasville to bring our STEM Literacy Program to two Pre-K classes, pairing a culturally relevant STEM book each month with an age-appropriate hands-on activity tied to the book. Our final two sessions captured the joy and curiosity at the heart of this work. 💜

🫧 In April, we read The Circle Hunt by Dr. Whitney B. Gaskins, and the kids learned all about circles. Then we headed outside to explore one of the most fun circles of all: bubbles! Each child had their own bottle, and together we blew and counted them. Watching them light up as they realized the bubbles they were chasing were the very shape they had just read about was a reminder of why early STEM exposure matters. ⭕

🌊 In our final session earlier this month, we read Yaya and the Sea, which follows a little girl’s journey to the beach with her mom and aunties. The kids proudly named marine animals they had learned about with their teachers, then we did a hands-on lesson on buoyancy, predicting and testing which items would sink or float in water. Some of the items we tested were seashells from our Founder and Executive Director Ms. Smith’s recent trip to the beach. Their predictions sparked real scientific thinking. 🐚

🙌🏽 A huge thank you to for their investment in this program, which allowed us to expand into Douglas County. Beyond the monthly sessions with the Pre-K students, we donated STEM books to Cedar Preschool, including titles for the older kids in their out-of-school-time program, and shared a few with Mayor Rochelle Robinson of the City of Douglasville so she has STEM books to read to youth as part of her Mayor’s Reading Program. 📖

Closing out this program year, we are reminded that when we put STEM books and experiences in front of young learners, we are “unveiling potential through exposure,” one circle, one bubble, one seashell at a time. 🔬💫
