Poison center says more people are overdosing on Benadryl 06/17/2026

Social Media Challenge Warning ⚠️

Over-the-counter medications can be dangerous when misused. Recent reports show an increase in teen overdoses involving diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, linked in part to risky social media trends.

Parents and caregivers can help reduce the risk:

• Store all medications up, away, and out of sight — preferably in a locked cabinet.
• Talk with kids and teens about the dangers of medication misuse.
• Stay aware of social media trends and online challenges.
• Remind teens that “over-the-counter” does not mean risk-free.

If you suspect a poisoning or overdose, call the Georgia Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 for free, confidential expert help 24/7.
