— Mexico’s first openly gay mayor, Benjamín Medrano, was shot multiple times and killed inside an ice cream shop in Guadalajara on July 7, raising questions about violence, visibility and safety for LGBTQ+ people in Mexico and across Latin America.

A former mayor of Fresnillo and member of the Chamber of Deputies, Medrano built a career that included politics, public life and representation for LGBTQ+ communities.

Before he stepped into politics, Medrano built a career as a singer, releasing albums of ballads and ranchera songs and, in 1994, opening one of the area’s first openly gay bars.

His killing comes amid sustained levels of violence affecting LGBTQ+ people, migrants and tourists, with advocacy organizations documenting murders and disappearances over the past year.
