We are heartbroken about the tragic shooting event and circumstances at Apalachee High School in nearby Winder, Georgia. While more “thoughts and prayers” are a nice sound bite to express to the media, real leadership on the issue demands creative, thoughtful, and urgent action. How about instead of blaming just the people or blaming just the guns, we blame both the people and the guns as the problem, and we start proposing and enacting legislative, executive, and judicial restrictions on both the people and their guns. Gun violence in our communities and in our schools is a public health crisis as well as defect in thinking about the Second Amendment as a shield to all common sense firearm restrictions in a modern society. If you support firearm safety and want to end gun violence, let us know and vote accordingly this election cycle.
