On June 28 this year Supreme Court of Belize confirmed the communal land rights of all Maya villages in Toledo. There was a celebration, but, unfortunately, the Maya's struggle for survival continues, because Belize government appealed the decision stalling - perhaps for years - its implementation. Sarstoon Temash National Park, created in 1994 in the southernmost corner of Belize is the second largest national park in Belize. It is managed by a grassroot organization of surrounding indigenous communities (mostly Q'eqchi Maya and one Garifuna), SATIIM: Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management. It has been declared one of the best managed protected areas in Belize and a wetland of global importance (a so called Ramsar site)
