Our Story
Welcome! This is our communications link for the GATE Coalition. GATE is a community coalition that brings together members from vital stakeholder groups such as youth, parents, schools, law enforcement, government, and more, to reduce youth substance use in DeKalb County, Georgia.
GATE is funded by SAMSHA - the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration - as a Drug Free Communities Support Program.
People have asked us why we have this particular focus. Our answer is simple: because no one else is doing this in the State of Georgia. We concentrate our efforts to:
• Build youth leadership to prevent substance use initiation
• Enhance school personnel skills to implement substance abuse prevention programming
• Train immigrant, limited English proficient alcohol vendors to follow local laws
• Educate and empower immigrant/refugee parents to prevent youth substance use
• Advocate for mandatory vendor trainings and limited outlet density
