In a week of unfathomably terrible current events I have the pleasure of heralding some good news…

My sister has been fighting stage 4 appendiceal cancer for the past five years - chemo, surgeries, remission, and recurrences… in December doctors gave her the option for palliative chemo. She’s 33 and refused slow death by poison.

She found Hope4Cancer, an integrative clinic in Cancún, and I am overjoyed to report that the therapies and treatments (that are designed to support the intelligence of the body in healing itself) are working and in 3 weeks she’s already healing. I know it’s cliche to describe cancer survivors as inspirational, but my sister can truly do anything she puts her mind to. I’m so proud of her for trusting herself, loving herself, believing in herself, and putting in the dang work every day to show up to her sacred life with presence, warmth, strength, and compassion.

Learning about cancer and the conditions that cause it has been deeply impactful on my work as a social naturopath. It has brought my sister and I together, and has changed how I move in my own body. I continue to be humbled to show up for her in acompañamiento en este viaje y siempre.

This week I am in preparations for a fasting ceremony. As the month of Ramadan begins and the season of Lent spirals, I am deep in the wise teachings of the spiritual technology of fasting. delivered a gorgeous sermon yesterday with a womanist theological reading of the impending wilderness and the ethics of responding to wild times with/from/in our bodies. An awake soma compels us to correct response - grief and action.

The embodied action of fasting is teaching me much about grief, the rigor of discipline, its showing me empathy and opening spiritual awareness. It’s helping me understand how tithing or donating or otherwise moving money and choosing to financially “go without” is a kind of economic fasting that is also a wilderness full of gifts and wisdom.
