One of the biggest design myths? That all of your wood tones have to match.

In reality, some of the most timeless interiors are built on contrast and variation. Mixing wood tones adds warmth, depth, and the collected feel that makes a home feel like it’s evolved over time rather than being purchased all at once.

A few of our favorite guidelines:
• Start with one dominant wood tone to anchor the space.
• Mix in lighter or darker woods for contrast — not exact matches.
• Repeat each tone at least a few times throughout the room so it feels intentional.
• Let texture do some of the work. Smooth walnut, reclaimed oak, white oak, and stained finishes all bring something different to the palette.
• Tie everything together with complementary materials like stone, metal, and textiles.

The goal isn’t perfect matching — it’s thoughtful balance. When layered well, mixed wood tones create spaces that feel warm, lived-in, and effortlessly timeless.
