Sorry to disappoint all of Harry Potter nerds out there, but here’s a challenge for you. JK Rowling put the 4 elements of alchemy in different houses for a reason, and I’ll tell you why.
1. Gryffindor - Earth 🌍 - Not Fire
So we have to start with a lead-in character. They want to be the center of attention, but their place is to drive forth the action with curiosity, bravery and friendship in order to circle back around to understanding what it takes to be a leader. Much like a globe which the Earth is, we only think of the lead-in character as the “main-character” because they are our protagonist, guiding us through the story.
JK Rowling gave Fire to the house for them to remember to remain stable (like the Earth) to support their own ambitions and courage in order not to burn those around them, with their actions and their words. Plus it fits their personality to make them feel the most important by giving them the “most powerful” most “dazzling” element of them all.
2. Slytherin🔥
Which brings us to the flip side of their coin, Slytherin who is bitter and jealous over stolen valor. They also get the color green because of the ambiguous and dualist interpretations of the color green, which is the color of the heart chakra in fact, very important. Which is usually illustrated with a ring of fire surrounding it, expressing the passion for ambition that Slytherin House possesses.
Water- is what Rowling gave them in order to cool their desires and their enflamed passions in order to maintain a level of calm and cool headedness. Also, the ability water to adapt and change like Slytherins are capable of doing, and are also in the gray areas of ambiguity like and amphibious snake that slithers in and out of the water like in and out the codes of “right” and “wrong”.
3. Ravenclaw💧
Possessing Air seems too simplistic and cut and dry just to say, “because their mascot is a bird,” isn’t enough. They are of course flighty people who tend to stick by and support their own kind like, “birds of a feather”. What they don’t see is that many creatures like themselves are also flying and perching in places they are in and it’s okay to get your beak out of the clouds to come down and say hello to other types of birds once in a while. They are bird-brains after all, the smartest ones though sometimes they think they know better than they do, yet they are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. Still they are brilliant, and agile, without the desire to show off or to be seen.
Water- is their true base element because birds actually interact with water in all of its forms. From ice, to water, to clouds. Water represents the “pool of knowledge/power” that is ever changing in shape and form, much like information. Water has a cooling effect for the mind, giving its user the ability to relax and think-straight once again.
4. Hufflepuff💨 - They are the most closely linked to nature, which is what brings the whole Earth concept back to them full circle. But as their name suggests, they are key prone to be full of words and hot-air, whether they be talking so expressly they tend to be misunderstood by those that haven’t began to see the full picture of love and kindness which links all of the personalities types back to each other through deeply intimate and platonic connections with plants, animals and people. As their name suggests, sometimes they indulge a bit too much in drinks and smokes but they are the ones who bring fun and merriment back to the others, reminding them to be kind to each other and have a good time! They may seem like they have their heads in the clouds because they can be lazy and aloof, but they actually need time spent in and with nature in order for themselves to recharge again and remind the others to put down their screens and books and to go out and play and entertain each other through their own artistic expressions and sports, but not to be competive and to see who wins but just for the fun of the sport and the feeling of exercise and excitement. Which is why they need to stay grounded and stay atuned with nature through the Earth to give back and support the others on the team and become the intelligent and ambitious leader like Neville Longbottom (who’s truly a Hufflepuff placed in the wrong house).
In fact, so is Harry, Hermoine and Ron. Harry is really a Slytherin on the inside but still remains a somewhat intelligent friend. Hermoine is a know-it-all Ravenclaw, and Ron is a cowardly and whiny Hufflepuff who has a close sentimental attachment yet also a fear of nature, especially his love for his pet opposed with his fear of creepy creatures.
