John A. White Golf Course
John A. White Golf Course is a 9-hole, public-access golf facility open year-round.
In honor of Women’s History Month, we recognize Renee Powell, a true pioneer whose impact on the game of golf continues to be felt across generations.
She was the second Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour and the first Black woman to hold LPGA Tour and PGA of America membership at the same time. Her legacy is deeply connected to Clearview Golf Club in Canton, Ohio, the course built, designed, and owned by her father, William Powell, the first Black person to do so in the United States. Today, Renee and her brother continue to steward that legacy through Clearview.
Her contributions to the game and to history have earned her induction into the Black Golf Hall of Fame in 2007 and the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 2017.
This Women’s History Month, we honor Renee Powell for breaking barriers, preserving legacy, and helping shape the future of golf.

Lee Elder stepping onto the first tee at the Masters wasn’t just another moment in golf. It was history honored in real time.
Elder was the first Black golfer to compete in the Masters in 1975, breaking one of the sport’s longest standing barriers and paving the way for generations to follow. When he returned as an honorary starter alongside legends like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player in 2020, the significance ran far deeper than a ceremonial tee shot.
Next time you see Jeff, ask him what it felt like to stand there, to hear the crowd rise at Augusta National, and to witness a man who carried so much weight for the game with such quiet strength and dignity.
Moments like that remind us why golf history matters. They remind us that progress is built on courage, resilience, and the willingness to walk through doors that were once closed.
To Lee Elder, thank you for the legacy you left and the path you created for so many who followed.
