It's National Hot Dog Day! No one knows with complete certainty who first called them "hot dogs," but the nickname became popular at American baseball games in the early 1900s. One famous story says newspaper cartoonist Tad Dorgan sketched vendors selling dachshund-shaped sausages and jokingly called them "hot dogs" because he wasn't sure how to spell "dachshund." Whether that famous cartoon ever existed is still debated, but by the early 1900s the nickname had become part of American language—and it has remained there ever since.

After six years helping keep guests and Cast Members safe at Disneyland Resort, Benny the security dog has officially worked his final shift. The nearly nine-year-old Golden Retriever was known for his calm personality, enormous smile, and ability to stay focused no matter how many dogs, squirrels, horses, or other distractions crossed his path. At his retirement party, Benny completed one last security check, found the training scent, and was showered with tennis balls by the coworkers who came to say goodbye. Then came the real reward: after years on a strict working-dog diet, Benny enjoyed his very first hot dog—and immediately went looking for seconds. Now he is heading home with his handler, Kevin, for a retirement filled with walks, hikes, beach trips, and plenty of time to finally act like an off-duty dog.
