It’s often been said that fear is just False Evidence Appearing Real. But what happens when the evidence is right in front of you and the pain of addiction becomes very real? When I discovered my son’s usage of drugs, he confided that many of the struggles he had endured in his young life had become overwhelming, and drugs made him feel normal when battling the emotional pain and depression. A year later it became clear that we had to reach out for help.
I began to search for a program that could assist our son in recovery, and found Insight through a positive online review that described a program where young adults found sobriety more exhilarating than being inebriated. All of this came at a time when we faced an interim of financial difficulty. With the deepest desire to have my son at Insight, I told God in my heart, “If you want my child to be in this program then you have to provide the means.” And that is where the Mustard Tree Foundation stepped in, with a generous scholarship funding half of the cost. It was as if God matched my seed of hope with a seed of financial help from the Mustard Tree Foundation.
With the help of the Mustard Tree Foundation and Insight, I have seen my son’s life slowly becoming a masterpiece—a work of art in progress. It has been amazing to watch my son grow and learn life lessons that so many teens are not even considering at this stage in their lives. Insight not only helped my son through the process of change, but also changed me as a parent, as I learned to support my son in his recovery by working the 12 steps to allow God to change me too. Through parent meetings, classes, and support of my sponsor, I am learning lessons of acceptance, relinquishing control, and finding a genuine relationship with my son. I am reminded of a scripture verse that says, “If we have faith the size of a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible.” Sometimes when battling addiction, a tiny seed of faith is all someone can muster, but the possibilities are endless with the help of organizations such as The Mustard Tree Foundation. I am forever grateful to the Mustard Tree Foundation for the investment made in my son to help him become the masterpiece he was always created to be.
