Someone brought us a vintage Submariner once, convinced it was worth $4,000 because that's what a jewelry store told them.
It was worth $9,000.
That gap is real money, and it happens more often than you'd think. Pawn shops and generalist jewelers almost always offer the least — not because they're dishonest, but because they don't specialize in Rolex and can't move it quickly.
After 25 years of buying pre-owned Rolex, here's what actually determines what your watch is worth, where to sell it, and the questions to ask before you accept any offer.

Rolex has never made the Day-Date in steel. Not once in seventy years.
Gold or platinum, no exceptions. That was the deliberate positioning from 1956, when the Day-Date became the first watch to spell out the full day of the week alongside the date. Eisenhower had one within a year of release. Every president since has worn one at some point — which is exactly how it earned the "Presidential" nickname.
We've sold pre-owned Day-Dates since 2000. Yellow and white gold from $20,000. Platinum with the ice-blue dial — a color you can't get on any other metal — from $38,000.

Most people who come to us wanting a Submariner would be happier with an Explorer. They just don't know it yet.
We've watched it happen more times than we can count — someone tries on a 41mm Submariner, looks thrilled, then puts on a 36mm Datejust next to it and goes quiet. They buy the Datejust.
25 years of selling pre-owned Rolex taught us that the mistakes buyers make come down to three things: wrong size, wrong source, wrong reference for their budget.

Your first Rolex is not your last. That's the thing most first-time buyers don't hear.
Rolex holds value. A $5,000 Oyster Perpetual worn for three years and sold for $4,500 costs you $500 to figure out exactly what you want next. That's cheaper than most mistakes.
The entry-level Rolex market starts at $3,500 pre-owned. Here's what to buy, what to avoid, and the mistakes first-time buyers make consistently.

Rolex Submariner: $10,100 retail. Pre-owned: $10,000–$13,000.
Omega Seamaster 300M: $5,700 retail. Pre-owned: $3,200–$4,500.
The Omega is a better deal on paper. More watch per dollar, superior anti-magnetic spec, available at retail without a waitlist.
The Rolex holds value. The Omega doesn't. Which matters more depends on why you're buying.
