DRY vs WET brush techniques:

^ I use this DRY BRUSH technique frequently when I want to put one color over another, but I want to allow the bottom color(s) to peek through. It’s more subtle than an all over wash, and creates tons of texture and interest. Then I build and build over this. 👉🏼

^ This is an example of wet brush technique. (Wet over dry.) I use this when:

A) I want all over coverage, ie, when I need an area of calmness to juxtapose against busier areas of the painting.

Or

B) when I want to create an area of interesting mark making, usually via scraping or scratch through. These can be lines, patterns, or squiggly designs. It’s a way to infuse whimsy and fun. And again, this allows the bottom colors to show through. So even though it appears that I’m “covering it up” — I’m not; not fully. It’s all part of abstract painting layering.

Both techniques illustrate why I usually start with darker or brighter colors as my base layers. 💁🏼‍♀️

The peek-through is everything!!! 🙌🏼😄
