We mourn the passing of Judge James “Jim” Spears last week. Judge Spears was one of the defining voices in our documentaries “In Search of Bass Reeves” and “In Search of the U.S. Marshals”.
Judge Spears brought to our films not only a profound knowledge of history and the law, but a quiet dignity, wisdom, and authenticity that could not be manufactured. His understanding of the American frontier, the federal courts, and the legacy of the U.S. Marshals Service helped shape the foundation of our work.
A lifelong servant to Fort Smith and its history, Judge Spears devoted himself to preserving the stories of those who came before us. From his years on the bench to his efforts in honoring Bass Reeves and supporting the U.S. Marshals Museum, his impact on the community will endure for generations.
Those of us who had the privilege of sitting across from him during interviews will remember far more than his expertise. We will remember his kindness, his humility, and the unmistakable passion he carried for history and justice.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Veterans like Robert Forsyth, David Lenox, and Clement Biddle brought federal law to life in towns that barely trusted a central government. Their actions proved that the Constitution was more than ink on paper. Some would die, others would face rebellion, all shaping a fragile republic.

The Proclamation of 1763, issued by King George III, drew a line along the Appalachians, forbidding colonial settlement westward. Historian Gordon Wood notes that “Americans conceived of liberty as inseparable from property and expansion”. To settlers, this wasn’t just a territory or land, it was a limit on opportunity and freedom itself. This boundary quietly sowed the first seeds of rebellion, setting in motion tensions that would soon challenge Britain’s authority in ways no one could yet imagine.
