Singing Beethoven 9 yesterday, it amazed me how text from almost 300 years ago felt like it was written for today. And looking out at a crowd of 3,000 people it struck me how divided and unified we can be at the same time. It also made me grateful to be an instrument with text- we send these messages out into the universe and that poetry penetrates in its own extraordinary way. Especially this poetry which many people know without ever even having come to a concert! A radical call for equality and brotherly love- and joy!

‘O friends, not these tones!
But let us sing more pleasant and joyful ones!’

Let us indeed! What was it that Martin Luther King Jr said? ‘None of us are free until all of us are free.’ It seems a long time then until we will be free. Equality isn’t a privilege—it’s a right. And yet, so many are fighting to simply exist much less have rights. I will never understand why people focus so much on others rather than themselves. As Elizabeth Taylor said so beautifully here two decades ago ‘nothing bad has ever come from love’ so why don’t we turn to love. Instead of hate. Thankfully music is one of the places we remind people to feel. And to love. And that we are all connected. Happy message Monday
