As we near the end of the school year, one posture tip to keep in mind is the weight of backpacks. Taking into consideration laptops, books, binders, etc. These objects can often lead to negative consequences later on if heavy loads are being carried over a long period of time. Increased backpack load can cause forward head/neck posture, mid-lower back pain, hip pain, and balance issues. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury one study suggested backpacks should be no more than 10-15% of a child's bodyweight (Perrone et al., 2018). Vaghela et al. (2019) suggested that applying proper technique when carrying a backpack as well as the appropriate weight will help reduce muscle strain in adolescent children.
