Representative Lemelin named Lead on Health and Human Services Committee

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Michael Lemelin (R-Chelsea) has been appointed Republican Lead on the 132nd Maine Legislature’s Health and human Services Committee. This high-profile committee will focus on several important issues this session.

“Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) accounts for 38% of General Fund appropriations,” said Rep. Lemelin. “Over 2/3 of DHHS’s budget is MaineCare, Maine’s program for Medicaid and the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program. We cannot tolerate waste, fraud, and abuse in this vital social safety net. There is mounting evidence that this is occurring at levels beyond comprehension. I will fight to protect our most vulnerable citizens and the taxpayers that support them by helping bring this problem to light and stopping it.”

The Health and Human Services Committee (HHS) focuses on issues related to health care, social services, and public health policies in Maine. It has jurisdiction over the Department of Health and Human Services.
