Let's talk speaker riders.

What are they? Who needs one? And what to include if you're making your own?

First of all, What *is* a speaker rider?

A speaker rider is a document or record of your speaking terms - that is, what you require in order to say "Yes" to a speaking engagement.

It sets clear expectations about things like speaking fees, airfare and hotel logistics, intellectual property rights, etc. It's your list of must-haves (and maybe even your list of hell-nos).

A speaker rider can also be a powerful vehicle for change at events and conferences.

It can include requirements around lineup diversity, accessibility, equal pay among speakers, etc. (E.g., Many riders are explicit about the % of speakers who must *not* be white cis-men.)

This is a meaningful way speakers - especially well-known speakers with influence - can leverage their privilege and authority to push for social change in their industries.

Who needs a speaker rider?

ALL SPEAKERS! Yep, no matter how β€œgreen” - you can benefit from creating a speaker rider.

As a new speaker you may not feel comfortable making "demands," but defining your non-negotiables can help you narrow your focus on where to pitch.

Eventually, when you've gotten some experience under your belt, you can start sharing your rider with events and conference organizers.

🧐What to include on your own speaker rider?

This part's up to you, but here's a good starting point:

πŸ”΄ Speaker fees + compensation (e.g. free tickets)
πŸ”΄ Reimbursement of travel + airfare
πŸ”΄ Intellectual property + sharing rights
πŸ”΄ Representation specs
πŸ”΄ Accessibility (physical + remote events)

We suggest getting inspired by some examples - check out Tatiana Mac, Kat Cosgrove, Cassidy Williams, Eric Eggert, Remy Sharp, and The Pudding/OpenNews.
