It is so very important for children who stutter to receive these messages from parents, educators, and even their peers!

โœ… Stuttering is something to be celebrated, so don't be afraid to talk about it with them
โœ… Make sure the child KNOWS their words are important
โœ… Educate others in their community about stuttering and how to approach discussing stuttering
โœ… Let them know their speech is special

But this is the general progression for the step-by-step how to teach a โœจnew sound:

1๏ธโƒฃ Isolation: focus on getting ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ & saying the JUST the sound
2๏ธโƒฃ Syllables: put a vowel in front of the sound ("uh๐ค") or behind the sound ("๐คee") - see which one the child does better with & go from there!
3๏ธโƒฃ One syllable: consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) refers to the ๐—œ๐—ก๐——๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—œ๐——๐—จ๐—”๐—Ÿ ๐—ฆ๐—ข๐—จ๐—ก๐——๐—ฆ (aka "phonemes") in the word, NOT the actual letters, so "buc๐ค," although spelled CVCC is pronounced "b" / "uh" / "๐œ๐ค" CVC
4๏ธโƒฃ Multisyllabic: instead of the individual sounds (phonemes) in the word, now you're focusing on ๐—ฆ๐—ฌ๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—•๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ฆ. Start with 2 syllables ("awa๐คe") & move up as progress is made! (3 = "๐คangaroo," 4 = "๐คindergarten")
5๏ธโƒฃ Phrases: keep it ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ (2-3 words) & play around with ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ you place target word in the phrase ("๐คeep going!" "that is ๐œool")
6๏ธโƒฃ Rotating sentences: use the ๐—ฆ๐—”๐— ๐—˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ (ex: "he got a...") & rotate the target words into that phrase (ex: "he got a ๐ค๐ž๐ฒ", "he got a ๐ค๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ", "he got a ๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ง", etc)
7๏ธโƒฃ Unique sentences: now change up the sentences & play around with where you put the target words within the sentences!
8๏ธโƒฃ Stories/conversations: even if a child cannot yet read, you can & should choose stories & center conversations around ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜€ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ! This gradually teaches them to monitor themselves with larger discourse
