Through our lens, beyond boundaries: Amplifying Black American stories in culture, science, and exploration.

02/23/2026

When we show up for our own, we show up for ourselves.

Austin’s Black History Month programming has been rich with storytelling, heritage preservation, and creative expression—from folk tales to local artists carrying culture forward.

Our community is smaller here compared to cities like Chicago or LA, but our presence still carries weight. It’s a reminder that representation is in the audience and supporters as much as on the stage and beyond.

These and upcoming events highlight both cultural preservation in action and what’s visible and intentional here in Austin.

There are layers to the shock we’re witnessing.

When people say they “never thought this could happen here” or “never thought this could happen to us” in response to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, it reveals something deeper than surprise. It exposes who has historically been understood as a full citizen in this country and who has not. That gap raises necessary questions about how solidarity is being defined, and for whom, within the idea of U.S. citizenship.

When state violence was directed at Black Americans like Tamir Rice or Breonna Taylor, it was rarely treated as a rupture of citizenship. The lack of collective alarm functioned like permission for law enforcement to continue practicing in this fashion. So when someone is not fully seen as a citizen, they are not fully protected as one.

What feels “new” now is not the violence.
It is who is being forced to recognize themselves as vulnerable to it.

If we’re truly “in this together,” then responsibility cannot be deferred or redirected. It requires holding one’s weight and staying focused on the work ahead.

Let’s build together.
