In 2017, during the Tubbs Fire in Northern California, a Great Pyrenees named Odin refused to evacuate with his family. Instead, he stayed to guard his family’s eight goats as the flames approached.

When the family returned after the fire, they found Odin alive — singed, limping, and surrounded by all the goats he had protected. He had also gathered a few baby deer that seemed to have sought shelter with him.

Odin became a symbol of loyalty and bravery, and his story was widely shared in news outlets and social media.
