How to Reduce Forklift Accidents 09/21/2021

4 Ways to Prevent Forklift Accidents

#1: Forklift Access Control
Limit usage to only those people authorized and trained to use equipment.

#2: Proximity Forklift Sensors: Turning Corners
Detect potential near misses and alert drivers before an accident

#3: Forklift Pedestrian Detection: Partial or Full
Make sure people are safe and stay outside the safety bubble of the vehicle

#4: Electronic Forklift Inspection: Mechanical Breakdown
Track inspections digitally to capture maintenance issues as they happen.

Some of the presentations at the ASSP got me thinking about forklifts and safety. Can an increase in accidents hinder the growth of the forklift manufacturing industry? I decided to do some research to find out if that’s true.

I discovered this paragraph from Allied Market Research. It states:
“The rate of accidents related to the forklifts trucks has increased over the past few years. More than half of the injured people are drivers or pedestrians who stepped down from the vehicle. In addition, of all the vehicles that are used in the workplace, forklift is one of the most dangerous and is often used around pedestrians. Furthermore, approximately out of 850,000 forklifts present in the U.S., 11% of them are involved in an accident. Thus, increase in safety issues and accidents related to forklift trucks is anticipated to hinder the growth of the forklift truck market.”

This is a concern as it doesn’t need to hinder the forklift market’s growth. All it needs is the right forklift safety solution.

We rely on our eyesight for everything in order to come up with the correct response. We think nothing of it when we trip and wonder ‘what did I trip on?’ Or you quickly move because you think you saw something coming your way. Sometimes it’s true, other times it’s not.

Forklift drivers don’t have the luxury of making a mistake. As a forklift driver goes about his workday, he needs to have multiple sets of eyes going on in all directions at the same time.

✅ Watch what work is being performed
✅ Watch when loads are lifted 13’ into the air
✅ Watch for pedestrians and obstacles
✅ Watch so the forklift doesn’t turn over when you’re going on/off a trailer
✅ Watch so turns are far enough away from the racks, walls, equipment

How can you get anything done?
