This portly spider crab has tiny hairs on its carapace (shell) that attract small pieces of algae, barnacles, shell fragments, or pieces of seagrass to help it blend in with its surroundings. In our upcoming LIVE program called “Crabs: Structures and Functions,” we'll learn about what makes a crab a crab and go over crab anatomy. Then, we'll dive a little deeper into specific adaptations different crab species have that allow them to survive in the environment. If we're lucky, we may even have a few special (🦀) guests!

Join us LIVE on May 20th for “Crabs: Structures and Functions.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.

If this program time or date doesn’t work for you, you can always email us at [email protected] to request an alternative date for your students.

There are 5 seagrass species that can be found along the Texas coast. Each species is pictured here with their common and scientific names. This may seem like a relatively small number of species, but there are only about 70 species of seagrass in the entire world. In our “Seagrass Science” program, students will create their own field guide that will help them identify each of these 5 species native to Texas. They will also learn about why seagrass is important and what TPWD biologists are doing to help protect it.

Join us LIVE on May 13th for “Seagrass Science.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.
