Thank you all Prensa ~ Bertha Rendon Delgado has been honored with State LULAC Woman of the Year 2022 at the 23rd Texas State LULAC Convention in South Padre Island,
Texas on May 21, 2022.
The LULAC Council of Austin congratulates Bertha Rendon Delgado on being named the State LULAC Woman of the Year 2022. This prestigious award recognizes her many years of dedicated service to the Mexican American community in Austin and throughout Texas. Her work has helped preserve the culture and history of East Austin, and her commitment to social justice has inspired many. We are proud to call her one of our own, and we look forward to seeing her continue to make a positive impact in our community.
Bertha Rendon Delgado is a Mexican-American community leader whose work has benefitted East Austin. She was mentored by Paul Hernandez, one of the most iconic activists and leaders in East Austin.
Delgadoβs accomplishments include being a community organizer, stopping the closure of schools in the area, preserving Eastside murals, and mounting protests for Mike Ramos, Javier Ambler, and Vanessa Guillen. Making sure that Latinos have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Fighting for our community and ensuring that our voices are heard.
In 2012, she was elected president of the East Town Lake Neighborhood Association. Under her leadership, the team finished the restoration of the Chicano Park Mural on the cinder block walls of Martin Pool. The original mural was painted in 1982 by Ramon Maldonado as a teenager without a permit. The city has since brightened and enlarged.
Thanks to Delgadoβs years of hard work, East Austin is a better place for everyone. She is an inspiration to the community and an example of what one person can do to make a difference.
