If it’s your first time working backstage during New York Fashion Week this season, you may be feeling unsure of how to properly prepare for what goes on backstage.
✅GET YOUR KIT READY: Fashion week can be hectic with the hustle and bustle of backstage. You never know what could happen, so it’s best to stay prepared for worst case scenarios. Your kit varies depending on your position, but make sure to keep some essential items like first aid, a mini sewing kit, disinfectant items, markers, tape, and a change of clothes.
✅ARRIVE EARLY: If you’re early, you’re on-time. But if you’re on-time, you’re late. Show up at least 15 minutes BEFORE your designated call time. This will give you time to arrive at the venue, find your assigned station, and setup, without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
✅GO WITH THE FLOW: Don’t take things personally and be open to receiving critiques on your work. There needs to be a consistent flow backstage for a successful show. Take advantage of opportunities to learn from who you’re assisting and/or working with, as it shows your willingness to work and may increase your chances of being asked back to work backstage again.

NYFW is coming up soon! Save this post if you’ll be attending any castings this season. ✍🏽
Here are 4 essential casting tips EVERY model should know for New York Fashion Week
✅TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF: Castings can be daunting and highly competitive. Do some self-care the night before the casting to relax and ease your mind. Prep your skin with a gentle, yet nourishing skin care routine to avoid any surprise breakouts/rashes.
✅HAVE YOUR WARDROBE READY: Avoid the frustration of not having the proper wardrobe for the casting by setting out your outfit the day before. The standard is black, appropriately fitted clothing that shows your figure. Always plan to wear a pair of stiletto pumps and avoid platforms.
✅PACK YOUR MODEL BAG: Make sure you have the essentials with you to stay prepared for anything that may happen leading up to, or during the casting! Pack a water bottle, lite bites, shape wear (compression shorts for men; strapped tank & biker shorts for women), 3 pairs of shoes (open sandal pump, stiletto pump, and sneakers), comp cards and/or polaroids, and 6 main beauty items (makeup remover, bandages, moisturizer (multi-use oils/serums), lip care, hair accessories, & manicure kit).
✅SHOW UP EARLY: Always arrive to the casting location well before the scheduled start time (approximately 30min-1hr). Make it your goal to be the first model to show up. You’ll avoid the consequences of traffic, subway/train delays, and waiting in line for hours—especially if you have other castings to attend.
❇️(BONUS) PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE: You should make time to practice your runway walk every chance you get. Remember, every designer may not want your signature walk for their show. Be adaptable and show a willingness to switch it up at the casting!
