There is a poster in my office that says, “The Power that made the body, heals the body. It happens no other way.”
This is a very profound statement and is absolutely at the heart of my belief system.
With the advent of the internet, we have gained access to much valuable, and sometime false, information. It is at our finger tips. Toe pain, let’s Google that. I have a headache after running, do I have a brain tumor- check Wikipedia. Web MD says that chiropractic can only help my low back pain and nothing else. All of this and much more information is available at the touch of a fingertip. And if you are my mother’s age, whatever is written must be the truth.
The real truth of the matter, according to Dr. McCormick, is that your body knows how to guide you to the answers you need to heal. Healing is an inside job. If you are in dis-ease, then you have many options. My first recommendation is to get still. Check in with your senses. Where is the pain? When did it start? What do I do to make it feel better? What do I do to make it feel worse? What do I need to do now? Who should I call? The first step to solving any problem is to get still and then to gather information from which to develop a solution.
I recently read the most amazing book by Dr. Joe Dispenza DC. The book is titled, You are the Placebo! In this book, he references many research studies and many anecdotal records that show the amazing power of the human mind and spirit at leading people to healing. A placebo has the power to bring about healing, because the person believes so strongly that it will help, and it does! His basic premise is that you have the innate ability to heal what ails you. Some people might call this mind over matter. Whatever “it” is, we all have that capability.
The problem with that belief is that we have not been taught how to tap into that power. Most of us grew up believing that if we are sick, it is because an “outside” something that has invaded our bodies and made us sick. And once we are sick, we have quick fixes to get us up and running again. I am not denying that in emergency situations, sometimes the quickest and best remedy is a medicine or a surgery. But for the most part, for the ailments that we commonly have, we have not been taught any other alternatives to our healing. Look at how many drug ads there are on the evening television. If you took an evening and counted them, you would be shocked. I have not seen many ads that say, just sit still and see yourself getting better. Not many endorsements for visualizing how you will feel when that upset stomach or itchy skin goes away. We are not taught how our body really works. Dr. Dispenza gives great explanation to these processes.
