It’s easy to think during difficult times like right now that people show us who they really are, but this article gives another truthful and interesting perspective.
Be kind to each other and to yourself! ❤️
If you or someone you know is in crisis you can call the 24/7 mental health crisis hotline with Integral Care at 512-472-4357 (free hotline, always available!)
If you have concerns related to COVID-19, you can call 2-1-1 and press option 6 for resources and more information!
If you are looking for therapy services I am currently accepting new clients for telehealth only at this time. Most plans have made exceptions for this to be a covered service during the health crisis. I accept Aetna, United (Optum, Oscar), Superior/Ambetter, Medicare and Medicaid. Call/email today to schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation to get started!
"We are seeing people's true colors."
"Now we know who people REALLY are."
I understand why our brain leaps to this judgment (spoiler alert...it's the stress response) but it really truly isn't true.
A stressed brain shows us the stress response. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Empathy, insight, morality...these are all characteristics of a well integrated brain that FEELS SAFE.
Judgment, selfishness, attacks (physical and verbal), defiance, ignoring...these are all stress response behaviors. We have all earned our stress response behaviors. The stressed out brain is concerned with survival. The stressed out brain is deciding our best course for survival based on all our previous experiences with danger.
In every given moment, we are all doing exactly what our brain believes is the best thing to do to survive. Once we are no longer paniced about our survival, we can return to prioritizing connection with others.
Those of us who are still able to prioritize connection must remember that a crisis does not strip away people's humanity.
How might the state of your OWN nervous system shift if you could see people's bad behaviors as the stress response...not their character???
