When the sleep deprivation subsides you will ache for these days. One thing you’ll never regret is photos with your newborn. Not just photos OF your newborn, but photos of the way they fit so teensy in your arms, your fresh face, before it’s settled into this new change. You’ll understand when you get there. I promise.

A sleepy newborn makes a session run smoothly from pose to pose, giving you variety in your gallery. It takes a non “easy baby” mom to know that not all newborns sleep when we want them to, so here’s some sage advice.

1. They WILL eventually sleep. The session is long for a reason and I’ll wait while your newborn cluster feeds for the third time or otherwise gets their grumpies over with. It will not be the first time I wait on a baby or the last.

2. Feed that baby. Sometimes they’re just hungrier than usual. Let them eat until they’re 100% satisfied and we’ll probably reap the rewards of a milk drunk baby who doesn’t stir when pass them from mom to dad.

3. Make sure they get a good burp in and that any tummy pain is remedied. I’ll show you ways to hold them that help their digestion if you need help.

4.. Swaddle and white noise. It just works. Even if you think your baby doesn’t need it. It’ll speed up the effort and give you more time for more photos.

4. While they’re awake, we’ll lean into it. I’ll get some photos of their eyes open in the meantime and if they have a full belly, no discomfort, the warmth of your arms and are snug in a swaddle, they’ll drift off in the process.
