Established in 1832 by Stephen F. Austin—known as the Father of Texas—Bastrop has been called "The Most Historic Small Town in Texas." Set right along the Colorado River, downtown Bastrop is lined with decades-old buildings that house local restaurants, shops, breweries, and government offices, such as the County Courthouse and Old County Jail (both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places). A few miles north of downtown lies Lake Bastrop. The 900-acre lake has excellent bass fishing, either from boats or from a pair of public fishing piers located on the southern and northern shores. Visitors can also fish in nearby Bastrop State Park, or explore the park on foot or bike via its scenic trails.
