The Emancipation Trail from Galveston to Houston begins at Pier 21, where Union General Gordon Granger disembarked at the Port of Galveston on June 19, 1865. The late Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee authored the bill to make Emancipation Trail a National Historic Trail.

BikeTexas has been honored to participate in multiple Juneteenth rides on the Emancipation Trail.

Please note: National Historic Trails, like the Emancipation Trail, are not necessarily off-road trails as we usually mean them. They use existing roads (or waterways) to connect multiple points of historical significance. In the map below, the yellow line is the trail as described in the bill creating the Emancipation Trail and is the route followed by the riders pictured. The other routes are alternatives that were included in the National Parks feasibility study that is required to create a National Historic Trail.
