The day your child turns 18, everything changes legally, and most parents don’t realize it until it’s too late. You’re still their parent, still supporting them, maybe even paying their expenses, but in the eyes of the law, you no longer have automatic access to their medical or financial information.
That reality becomes very real in an emergency. If something happens and your child can’t communicate, hospitals may not be able to share updates with you. Not because they don’t want to, but because they’re legally not allowed to.
The same applies to finances. Banks won’t give you access or let you step in, even if your child needs help managing things.
This is where preparation matters. A few simple documents can change everything by allowing you to access medical information, make decisions if needed, and step in financially during a critical situation.
The most important part is timing. These documents need to be in place before anything happens, because once you’re in the middle of an emergency, it’s already too late to fix.
It’s one of those things people keep putting off, until they realize how serious it actually is.
