Would you have guessed these are in October and November?

Yes... it could be 90°. It could be 55°. That's just Texas. 😅

But the light...

That's what I'm chasing.

I'm a natural light photographer, which means the sky is my light source. Before I ever choose a location, I'm looking at where the light is coming from and how it will fall on my subject.

An open field gives me soft, glowing backlight.

Downtown gives me incredible reflected light bouncing off buildings.

Open shade creates beautiful, even skin tones.

Backlighting adds depth, separation, and that dreamy glow.

And yes... sometimes I'll even photograph in hard light when the story calls for it.

The location is simply the canvas.

The light is what creates the photograph.

For the photographers here...

Almost every portrait is photographed on my Canon R6 Mark II with my 70-200 around f/3.2. I shoot in Kelvin because I want complete control over my color instead of letting Auto White Balance make those decisions for me.

For my seniors and families...

If you've been thinking about an October or November session, now is the time. Fall in Texas isn't about colorful leaves. It's about beautiful light, comfortable evenings, and some of the most flattering portraits of the entire year.

I’m looking for a few little personalities to help me create something beautiful!

I’m selecting:
• 2 girls
• 2 boys
• Ages 3 to 10

These sessions will focus on natural movement, genuine connection, and beautiful golden light. Think running barefoot, laughing, exploring, and simply letting kids be kids.

I’m especially looking for children who are comfortable in front of the camera and families who love timeless, natural portraits.

Selected models will receive one complimentary edited digital image in exchange for allowing me to use the images in my portfolio, website, and social media. Additional images and artwork will be available for purchase.

Must be in Austin. Session will be in Westlake/Lake Travis/Vandegrift area.

Day 1 of 5: Learn to See Light - Backlit Photos

The biggest difference between an average portrait and a beautiful one usually isn't your camera... It's the light.

Every image in this series was created using 100% natural light.
No reflector.
No off-camera flash.
Just learning to recognize and use beautiful light.

When I arrive at a session, I don't start by looking for the perfect location. I start by looking for the perfect light. Once I find that, everything else falls into place.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II + RF 70-200mm f/2.8L

Settings for these image
• Lens: 70-200mm
• Focal Length: between 80-200mm
• Aperture: between f/2.8 or f/3.2
• Shutter Speed: between 1/250 sec and 1/500 sec
• ISO: between 200 - 800
• White Balance: Kelvin (between 6500 - 7800)
