A sun bathers paradise! ππ
This little American alligator found prime lakeshore access to do his daily basking and we could not be more happy for him. Sun basking is the main way alligators and other cold-blooded animals regulate their body temperature. When water and air temperatures are cooler, alligators will take to lake shores, logs, or man-made platforms to absorb the sun's rays to help raise metabolism and increase energy levels. On extremely warm days, alligators may also be seen basking with their mouths open, a behavior known as βgaping,β which helps release excess body heat, similar to a human sweating or a dog panting. Sunbathing gators are usually more focused on temperature regulation than hunting, but it is still important to keep your distance and let them enjoy catching some rays in peace.

Six months into 2026, we're taking a moment to look back at what the TLC community made possible in 2025.
Because of the support of our members, volunteers, landowners, and partners, Texas landscapes were protected, wildlife habitat was conserved, and special places across the state continued to thrive. From caring for TLC preserves to supporting conservation projects on the ground, every contribution helped make a lasting impact.
Conservation is a team effort, and we're grateful for everyone who played a part in protecting the land, water, and wildlife that make Texas unique.
