Going back to CR in August. I am so excited to tour the Nicola Peninsula. Lots of availability in the Sunset Hills Condo’s. Pm me for information.

Mal País is one of those special corners of Costa Rica where time seems to move a little slower and life feels beautifully connected to nature. Located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula near Santa Teresa, Mal País was once a quiet fishing village known mostly to local fishermen, farmers, and adventurous travelers willing to endure rough roads and long journeys to reach the coastline. Long before luxury villas and surf retreats appeared, the area was deeply rooted in simplicity, family traditions, and the rhythms of the Pacific Ocean. The name “Mal País,” which translates to “Bad Land,” likely came from early Spanish explorers who found the terrain rugged and difficult for farming and travel. Ironically, many now consider it one of the most beautiful places in all of Costa Rica.

The culture of Mal País is a fascinating blend of old Costa Rican traditions and an international community that slowly grew over the last few decades. Local Tico families still carry strong values centered around kindness, humility, hard work, and community. You’ll find fishermen launching boats before sunrise, neighbors greeting one another warmly, and small sodas serving traditional meals like gallo pinto, fresh fish, arroz con pollo, and tropical fruit juices. Over time, surfers, artists, yoga enthusiasts, and digital nomads from around the world discovered Mal País and helped shape its laid-back and creative atmosphere. Despite the growth, the area has worked hard to preserve its peaceful identity and close connection to nature.

Nature itself plays a huge role in the soul of Mal País. Dense jungle spills toward rocky coastlines and hidden beaches, while monkeys, scarlet macaws, iguanas, and tropical birds fill the trees with life and sound. The nearby Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve, established in 1963 as Costa Rica’s first nature reserve, helped protect much of the surrounding environment and became an important symbol of conservation in the country’s history. The reserve attracted naturalists and eco-travelers long before ecotourism became popular worldwide. Today, many people who visit or move to Mal País are drawn not only by surfing and beaches, but by the deeper feeling of tranquility and balance that defines the Pura Vida lifestyle.

What makes Mal País truly memorable is that it still carries an untamed spirit. Even with modern growth nearby, there remains a feeling that life there revolves around sunsets, ocean breezes, conversations over coffee, barefoot walks, and appreciation for the natural world. In many ways, Mal País represents both the history of Costa Rica’s humble coastal communities and the modern dream of living a slower, more meaningful life connected to the land and sea.

Amazing Costa Rica has so many places of interest. 120 miles in any direction are the most incredible places to visit. My next trip I plan to visit the Nicoya Peninsula. That is why I like Playa Del Coco. 20 minutes from the Airport in Liberia, makes it a great home base to travel to beautiful beaches within 15 - 20 minutes or spend the day exploring, jungles, waterfalls or amazing Pacific Ocean adventures.

Thank you all for the thoughtful birthday wishes. Due to my awful wrist arthritis I don’t do Facebook much anymore or anything for that matter. Hand surgery #2 will happen soon 6-9 month recovery and look out 2025 I am hoping to better than my old self and humbled by the months of feeling incapable. Life is like a box of chocolates and I got lucky to pick the weak hand morsel. If there is a fix I am going to try. Bless all of you out there and especially those who are struggling with pain, hardship and everyday life. I tell myself every day there are a lot of chocolates in that box that are way worse than the one I got stuck with.
