Chef Kareem El-Ghayesh wasn’t always known as The Egyptian Cowboy. For years he was a mere mortal, working a corporate job in a suit & tie at Cairo, Egypt, living a life that he then thought suited him.

Everything changed in the thrilling year of 2012, when Kareem traveled all the way from Egypt to the US and had his first, life-changing bite of Texas BBQ.

🥩 After falling in love with Texas BBQ, Kareem’s story took a turn: he left his homeland and built a new life in Austin, TX, pursuing his culinary destiny. He traded his calculator for a smoker, and studied culinary, worked his way up through the BBQ industry in Texas, and eventually opened his own foodtruck, KG BBQ.

🤠 By the hands of Chef Kareem El-Ghayesh, KG BBQ reshaped Texas BBQ, infusing the richness of Egyptian cuisine. The Egyptian Cowboy was born: local flavors combined with bold African spices, resulting in a unique piece of art.

By collaborating with Chef Kareem in the creation of his Custom Kitchen Island, Obra had the privilege of becoming part of his extraordinary story. His Obra Island features a Raised Bar, a Produce Drawer, and custom inserts for his rituals.

Obra’s craftsmen transformed Oak & Parota wood to elevate this bustling hostel in Mexico City’s Cuauhtémoc borough.

Our goal was to create a cozy, homelike space for world-travelers, artists and professionals to unwind and feel at home, tasting delicious Sunday brunches and evening cocktails while exploring La Colonia Hipódromo Condesa CDMX.

🌍 Worldwide Intersections: Languages 💫

For almost 800 years, up until 1492, the Moorish, mostly Muslims of Arab descent, ruled the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of Portugal and Spain. After all these centuries, the Spanish language carries strong Arabic heritage.

When the Spanish colonized America, their language, immersed in Arab influences, set roots in the continent. For centuries, Spanish and English have been using up to 4000 Arabic-originated words! Here are some examples:

🌟 ¡Ojalá!, used in Mexico and Texas, means “I hope so” or “hopefully”, and comes from Arabic inshālla (ان شاء الله), meaning “If God wills”.

🥘 Azafrán, Spanish for saffron, is a fundamental spice in Texas, Mexico and Egypt. The word derives from az-za’farān (اَلزَّعْفَرَان).

🧭 Brújula means compass, and its origin is the Arabic word bousola (بوصلة).
