Looking for some advice from my Emergency Management and Public Safety friends.

As I continue working toward my long-term goal of serving as an Emergency Manager for a large city or county, I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree and would appreciate your input.

Since I will have a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, I’m looking for a graduate degree that will complement my education rather than duplicate it. I’m interested in determining which master’s degree would provide the best opportunity to broaden my expertise, strengthen my leadership and administrative skills, and enhance my long-term career prospects.

For those of you working in emergency management, public safety, government administration, homeland security, or related leadership positions, what master’s degree do you think provides the best preparation and greatest career opportunities?

Some programs I’m considering include:
• Master of Public Administration (MPA)
• Master of Homeland Security
• Master of Public Policy (MPP)
• MBA
• Other related degrees

My goal is to eventually move into a senior leadership role within a large county or municipal emergency management organization.

What degree has provided the most value in your career, and why? Any recommendations on specific programs would also be greatly appreciated.
