I can’t believe it!! I just released this song last Friday!! Wow! Thanks so much for the support!

I wrote a nu-disco / disco house track that is coming soon, with vocals by Jaki Nelson.

She encouraged me to send the song to labels instead of releasing it myself, so I decided to explore that route. With her name attached, I was curious to see what kind of offers would come back.

It has been revealing.

I remember when saying you had a record deal felt like a huge milestone by itself. It felt like proof that someone believed in the music and could open doors you could not open on your own.

Labels have shown interest, but so far, none of the offers are clearly stronger than what I have already been able to do independently, especially once you factor in giving up a big percentage of the revenue.

The main difference, in this case, is Beatport exposure, which can be useful in the EDM space, but Beatport access alone is not the same thing as a full release strategy.

I am curious how other independent artists are thinking about this now. At what point does a label offer actually add enough value to be worth giving up control?

My weird cyberpunk song is live today. This started as a guitar riff and then I added orchestral instruments and decided to go with an Edgar Allen Poe theme with the lyrics. Check it out! https://open.spotify.com/track/4NiMI3JY4wxVEyEYFyPu5Z?si=eNpgPYyzTHq7GrI-Z14c1A

I have been getting a lot of DMs asking how I am getting so many Spotify streams and what people can do to grow their own music, so I figured I would just make a post. I definitely do not have all the answers, and I am still learning like everyone else, but I can share some of the things that have helped me.

A big part of my approach is simply putting the music in as many relevant places as possible and seeing what connects. I have never believed you should only focus on your local area. Artists sometimes find strong support in other cities or even other countries before things really build at home.

Since I release music across multiple genres, I also try to be strategic about where I send it. I pay attention to which countries tend to respond most to certain styles, and I spend more time targeting playlists and outlets in those areas. I also try not to center everything around Spotify. I think it is important to pay attention to other streaming platforms too, because growth can start in different places.

While I cannot really discuss the private relationships I have developed through my label, I can share some feedback on the public platforms I have used. The best results for me have come from Songtools.io, Groover.com, and One-Submit.com. SubmitHub.com has been more hit or miss for me, although I will say their genre tool has been very helpful.

I recently tried GPMmusicgroup.com. In my experience, it does not produce the kind of numbers it advertises, but one thing I will say is that, unlike the others I mentioned, they do not reject any songs. That may make them a useful option for artists who are having trouble getting accepted elsewhere or who are trying to get past that early 1,000-stream stage.

Another thing I have noticed is that some artists release music and then do very little to actually send it out. In most cases, listeners are not just going to magically find your song. You usually have to put some time, effort, and often some money behind getting it in front of people.

I think singles are a better strategy than leading with an album or EP, unless you already have a strong audience. Listening habits have changed because of streaming, and artists have to adapt to that. It is harder to get people to spend time with a full project right away, so I think it makes more sense to build momentum by releasing strong singles first. If you do want to release a larger project, I recommend leading with your strongest songs first, spacing them out every 6 to 8 weeks, and then releasing them together later as part of an EP or album if you want.

It is also important to use the free playlist pitching tools available through Spotify and Amazon Music (this is available in your artist accounts about 2-3 days after it is sent by the distributor). I submit my music at least 2 to 4 weeks before the release date, because that gives the song time to be considered for playlists before it is out. That initial push helps with Spotify algorithm activity early in the release. I also release on Fridays, since that is the standard release day.

At the end of the day, there is no single trick. It is really a mix of consistency, research, relationships, and getting your music in front of the right listeners.

I get plenty of rejections too, whether it is because someone does not connect with the song, the voice, or just does not think it is the right fit for what they need. Do not give up. I hope this helps some of you.
