Austin Pets Alive!
🐾 Helping People Help Pets 🐾
Over 120,000 lives saved since 2008 Austin Pets Alive! Since 2008, APA! Page is maintained by APA! staff and volunteers.
At 3:00 a.m., 21 kitties and 49 dogs — including 7 of the 21 Shih Tzus that came from a severe overcrowding situation — took flight, making stops along the way to their next chapter.
Two weeks ago, our Transport team helped rescue 21 Shih Tzus from a rural area outside Austin. They arrived severely matted and flea-covered, but now they're getting the chance at life they deserve — and their little personalities are shining through.
Sweet Sunshine is one of those wonderful pups. She arrived trembling and unsure of everyone around her. She went to a foster home with Shirley, another one of the Shih Tzus, and in the safety of that environment, Sunshine’s, world began to glow.
"Sunshine was pretty timid at first, but she's starting to show a lot more of her frisky, playful side," her foster shared. "(She) has given herself the role of Shirley's guardian, (venturing) out to explore but always checks back in with Shirley." It's no surprise that she has assigned herself this role after everything that they’ve been through together.
Sunshine and 69 dogs and cats are flying toward a future home thanks to our Transport Program that we built during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, when thousands of shelter pets were at risk because their original shelters felt they had no way to care for them during the Texas freeze that left many shelters unable to cope. This same programming has now helped more than 10,000 dogs and cats find safety across the country.
Our 8th annual Raise A Day for APA! is almost here, and journeys like Sunshine's are exactly what it funds. Give now through June 8 and your gift goes twice as far — Ally Medical is matching every dollar up to $15,000 so the next pet in need gets the same shot at home.

Keith was just five months old when he went missing. As time passed his family in Houston assumed they’d never see him again
Three years later, Keith turned up in a garage in Austin. Originally the owner of the garage was willing to take care of Keith, but luckily they did the right thing and brought him to us to get him scanned for a microchip. That chip led us to Laura, his original owner. Our PASS team tracked her down, and she was stunned to learn he was alive and well. Soon after, she was driving him home to San Antonio.
Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) is how we keep Texas pets with the people who love them — a judgment-free way to keep animals out of the shelter system entirely. Reunions like Keith's don't happen by accident. They take a community of people coming together to protect pets’ best interests. Right now, you can be a part of that community and your generosity can go twice as far.
Raise A Day for APA! is just one week away! This annual fundraiser was designed to take you on a deeper look into our lifesaving programs while we work to raise what it takes to operate our entire organization in a 24-hour period.
Early giving for Raise a Day is live right meow!. Through June 8, our match partner Ally Medical will double every gift, up to $15,000 — so your dollars go TWICE AS FAR before the day even begins.
