A powerful X1.1-class solar flare erupted from sunspot Region 4479 on June 30, and NOAA issued a G2 geomagnetic storm watch for July 3. Space weather watchers are also reporting multiple CMEs… coronal mass ejections… heading toward Earth, which could spark Fourth of July auroras if conditions line up just right.

So yes… while America is lighting fireworks in the sky, the cosmos may be lighting up too. ✨

Auroras could be visible farther south than usual this holiday weekend, though visibility depends on timing, clouds, the Moon, and how Earth’s magnetic field receives the solar energy.
