FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Steuben County Deputy Karson Meeks Named National Sheriff’s Association Deputy Sheriff of the Year

OMAHA, Nebraska (June 10, 2026) — The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Deputy Karson Meeks has been named the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) Deputy Sheriff of the Year, receiving the prestigious Charles “Bud” Meeks Deputy Sheriff of the Year for Merit Award during the National Sheriffs’ Association Annual Conference in Omaha, Nebraska.

Deputy Meeks has served with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office for three years and is currently assigned as a patrol deputy specializing in crash reconstruction. In just over a year in that role, he has distinguished himself through exceptional dedication, professionalism, and technical expertise.

A graduate of Trine University’s Criminal Justice Program, Deputy Meeks demonstrated his commitment to law enforcement early by attending the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on his own initiative while enrolled at Trine. Over the past year, he has spent numerous weeks away from home completing advanced training to become a crash reconstructionist and serves as a member of the Steuben County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, assisting with the investigation of some of the region’s most serious crashes.

Despite the demanding responsibilities of crash reconstruction, Deputy Meeks continues to excel as a patrol deputy. He is recognized for his strong work ethic, professionalism, and compassionate approach to serving the public. His ability to treat all individuals with dignity and respect, even in difficult situations, exemplifies the highest standards of law enforcement service.

“Deputy Meeks represents the very best of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the law enforcement profession,” said Chief Deputy Michael D. Meeks. “His commitment to service, dedication to professional development, and respectful treatment of others make him truly deserving of this national recognition.”

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office congratulates Deputy Karson Meeks on this outstanding achievement and thanks the National Sheriffs’ Association for recognizing his exemplary service to the citizens of Steuben County and the State of Indiana.

2026 Indiana Sheriffs' Association Jail Staff Retreat & Training

Today we kicked off our first full day of training at Trine University, bringing together corrections officers, jail administrators, and jail staff from across Indiana for three days of professional development, networking, and growth.

Attendees spent the day engaging in discussions on leadership, jail policies, risk management, and other important topics currently impacting correctional facilities throughout our state. These sessions provide valuable opportunities to learn from industry experts, share experiences, and gain practical knowledge that can be taken back to their agencies.

While training is a major focus of the retreat, this event is also designed to give our hardworking jail professionals a chance to connect with peers, build relationships, and recharge. The work performed inside our county jails is demanding, and we are proud to provide an environment that supports both professional growth and personal wellness.

Thank you to all of our presenters, sponsors, and attendees for making this event a success. We look forward to another great day of learning tomorrow!
