After about 7-8(?) years of not playing Oakhurst Porchfest, I will be gracing the front lawn of 124 Mead Road tomorrow with Lee Harvey Wallbanger—a few doors down from The Imperial.

What a Friday. Began with so many incredible “ups.” Seeing Alicia Keys’ GIANTS exhibit at the HIGH. Errands with my sons—so many hugs. Shabbat dinner with parents. Super fun gig at Red Light Café with wonderful friends on stage and in the audience, some of us going a decade strong. And then, the sad news of Warren Lankford’s passing.
Warren and I met in the pit of New Manchester HS, on their first production of “Bring It On.” I don’t recall the year but I will never forget him. Often first in the pit and last to leave. Fully devoted to his craft and serving the song. Always kind. Always learning. So passionate about music, he inspired everyone around him to dig deeper. Our last show together was “Once On This Island” where he was MD. I’m so grateful that I got to watch him drive the bus. He called me recently to record some guitar tracks for his latest studio project. He was creating and working right up until the very end. He was still dreaming, still looking ahead, still making career goals and plans. I sensed that he would probably never retire, he was a musician’s musician. None of us thought he would leave so soon.
On this sabbath day, I am reminded of how uncertain and precious Life is … You never know when your time is up.
