This week in our Gospel of John series, we looked at Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3:13–15.

Jesus points Nicodemus back to Numbers 21, where Israel was bitten by fiery serpents in the wilderness. God provided one way for them to live: look at what He had lifted up.

Jesus then reveals that this Old Testament picture was pointing to Him.

Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, the Son of Man had to be lifted up on the cross, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

The message is simple but powerful: Look and live.

Salvation is not found in repairing ourselves, fixing ourselves, or proving ourselves. It is found in looking by faith to Christ, the One God lifted up for us.

For the sinner, look to Christ and receive eternal life.
For the weary believer, keep looking to Christ and walk by faith.

**The Heart God Promised**

When Jesus told Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again,” He was not introducing a brand-new religious idea. He was pointing back to what God had already promised through Ezekiel.

Israel had the Temple, the priesthood, the sacrifices, the covenants, and the law — but the system could not change the heart of man. God promised something greater: cleansing, a new heart, and His Spirit within.

Nicodemus had religion, but he needed life. He had knowledge, but he needed the Spirit. He had a system, but he needed the heart God promised.

That is still man’s need today. We do not need a better version of the old man. We need the life that only God can give.
