Mesa Verde National Park:
- Protects more than 5,000 archaeological sites—including over 600 cliff dwellings
- Is home to about 74 species of mammals, 200 species of birds, 16 species of reptiles, five species of amphibians, six species of fish, and over 1,000 species of insects and other invertebrates.
- Contains approximately 556 species of vascular plants, 75 species of fungi, 21 species of moss, and 151 species of lichen. Some of these are rare endemic species that are found nowhere else on earth.
